Maatsuyker
Island lighthouse is the southernmost of Australia's
lighthouses. The
station was opened On 1 June 1891 by the Hobart
Master Warden, Captain T.M. Fisher.
The original light source was a six ring oil burning
lamp which was replaced in 1921 by vapourised
kerosene. Maatsuyker Island was one of the last
kerosene lighthouses in Australia. Today, the
light is a modern 120 volt tungsten halogen lamp
which is powered, due to the remote location,
by diesel alternators. Originally installed optics,
a Chance Bros. first order lens, are still in
use today and provide a nominal range of twenty
six nautical miles.
The
tower and associated outbuildings were designed
to withstand the wild weather conditions of the
'Roaring Forties'.
Maatsuyker
Island lighthouse, together with its cottages,
are on the Register of the National Estate.
